GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Thousands of consumers are taking to social media to express their frustration with a shirt in Target’s Ugly Christmas Sweater collection.
The shirt, which reads “OCD: Obsessive Christmas Disorder,” is on sale online and in stores across the nation.
Using the hashtag #OCD, some consumers are voicing off on social media including Twitter and Facebook. They claim the phrase is making light of obsessive-compulsive disorder, which is a serious mental illness affecting millions.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, OCD is a condition characterized by both obsessions and compulsions.
Meanwhile, others on social media are supporting the sweater, saying it is funny.
“We never want to disappoint our guests, and we apologize for any discomfort. We currently do not have plans to remove this sweater.”
According to Adweek.com, Target isn’t the only retailer to sell merchandise with that phrase. Other companies online appear to be selling shirts as well.
