ECU faculty gather to protest chancellor’s 19% pay raise

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – ECU faculty members wore black Tuesday to convey their disappointment with a 19% pay increase for the outgoing chancellor while they received a one-time $750 bonus.

The UNC Board of Governors recently approved raises for 12 of the 17 UNC system chancellors in a closed session.

Locally, outgoing ECU Chancellor Steve Ballard will benefit from that 19% pay raise, increasing his salary from $322,560 to $385,000. Other university employees and faculty received a $750 bonus, but no raise.

Ballard released a statement saying, “I certainly recognize that the timing of this increase will raise concerns. Our faculty and staff have not been compensated adequately and yet they continue to excel and to implement our mission. Retaining our talent has been our first priority for several years but much more work remains.”

ECU faculty met at the Cupola on campus at 1 p.m.
