Military women, past and present, honored at luncheon in Havelock

HAVELOCK, N.C. (WNCT) – Over 150 military women, past and present, gathered Thursday at a luncheon in Havelock.

Today, women make up about 20 percent of the nation’s military and more than 70 thousand female veterans live right here in North Carolina.

Today’s luncheon recognized women as a vital part of our nation’s armed forces.

We spoke with two women who live right here in eastern North Carolina and served in World War II but met for the first time today.

“It’s good to find somebody that’s been around as long as we have,” said Lida Barnes and Mary McManus.

Other women in attendance included veterans from all past major wars such as Vietnam and the Persian Gulf and active duty military.
