Local diabetics work to better manage disease

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – One in every 5 people in Pitt County has diabetes. That’s higher than the national average.

That’s why the local health community is working to teach diabetics how to better manage their disease.

It’s all part of the 14th annual Winning with Diabetes conference. A hundred diabetics throughout the East came together Wednesday to hear from local experts about the best ways to deal with diabetes dilemmas.

We spoke with diabetics at the conference who say better management can change your life.

“It allows people to get information and get informed on how they can stay on top of their diabetes and keep it, you know, stay healthy. You can stay healthy with diabetes. It’s not something that’ll take you out. And I think people need to be aware of this,” said Calvin Henderson, a local type 2 diabetic.

This is just one event associated with National Diabetes Awareness Month this November.
