Alliance man facing charges after stealing vehicle, multi-county chase

BAYBORO, N.C. (WNCT) – An Alliance man is behind bars after stealing a vehicle and leading several law enforcement agencies on a multi-county chase.

Sheriff Chris Davis with the Pamlico County Sheriff’s Office says it all started late Tuesday night when they received a report about a stolen vehicle on Main Street in Alliance around 10 p.m. A handgun was also reported stolen from the home. They immediately issued a BOLO (be on the lookout) for the vehicle to surrounding law enforcement agencies in adjacent counties.

Just before 1 a.m. Wednesday, deputies got the word from Craven County Communications that River Bend Police Department and Craven County Sheriff’s Office were in pursuit of the stolen vehicle and were headed toward Pamlico County. Deputies joined the chase a short time later, deploying stop sticks and deflating all four tires on the stolen vehicle. Even with the tires deflated, the chase continued for about 10 miles at speeds less than 30 mph. The chase ended on Kershaw Road after the suspect, 22-year-old Devonta Respers, wrecked the vehicle in a ditch.

Respers was arrested and charged with Felony Larceny of a Motor Vehicle, Felony Possession of Stolen Vehicle, Felony Flee to Elude Law Enforcement, Larceny of a Firearm, Failure to heed emergency lights/siren, Driving While Impaired, and Reckless Driving to Endanger. His bond was set at $32,500 secured.
