GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT/AP) – ECU’s outgoing chancellor is getting a hefty pay increase.
The UNC Board of Governor’s on Monday released information on raises approved during a closed-door meeting Friday. The university system’s board says consultants studied the issue and found campus heads were underpaid.
That means Steve Ballard will receive a 19% raise, bumping his salary from $322,560 to around $385,000. It’s retroactive to July 1st.
Meanwhile, other university employees and faculty received a $750 bonus, but no raises.
“I certainly recognize that the timing of this increase will raise concerns,” Ballard said. “Our faculty and staff have not been compensated adequately and yet they continue to excel and to implement our mission. Retaining our talent has been our first priority for several years but much more work remains.”
The chancellor of the state’s biggest public university is now also the best-paid. North Carolina State University Chancellor Randy Woodson is getting a 13 percent raise to $590,000 a year.
The biggest pay bumps, besides East Carolina, go to UNC-Charlotte and Western Carolina leaders.
Ballard announced in July he would be stepping down July 1, 2016. His last pay raise was in 2012.
