CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – Someone vandalized and stole part of a historic Chesapeake church last week.
Vandals knocked down a flag pole outside Good Hope United Methodist and took the American flag. The church sits along Benefit Road in rural Chesapeake. It was founded in the 1830’s.
“We have a lot of history,” Pastor Mark Christian said. “A lot of history in this historic building. It’s always had that strong community pull.”
But last Tuesday night, someone left church members scratching their heads.
“To me it’s kind of a slap in the face to the people and to the community for something like that to happen especially at a church,” Christian added.
Grainy surveillance video shows a car pulling into the church’s empty lot, just after 9 p.m. last week. It appears it could be a Jeep Commander. A man is then seen bringing down the American flag which was flying out front.
“They were taking the flag down and they put the ropes inside the car door,” Christian said. “Someone took them in there and pulled it down.”
The vandals used the ropes from the pole to bring the pole to the ground. The damage was left behind along with a beer can.
“It makes you sad to think about.” Christian added. “I think about not only all of us that are in the congregation, but the generations who built this church.”
Many of the generations now lie across the road in a cemetery. They include veterans from every branch. You can’t help but wonder what they were thinking as the flag was driven away?
The church will go on and at some point will fix the pole..
“I think they need to face what they did whether lucid enough to realize what they were doing,” Christian added.
