ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WNCT)- Members of the Coast Guard station in Elizabeth City have adopted a new mascot after their former mascot passed away in May.

They named the German Shepard Chief Bert. He served as an explosives detection dog with a Coast Guard Maritime Safety and Security team in Galveston, Texas before he retired back in May.

Chief Bert’s owner was no longer able to take care of him, so the station in Elizabeth City offered to adopt him as their new mascot. Members from the station traveled nearly eight hours from Elizabeth City to Washington, Pennsylvania to take ownership of Chief Bert.
