Kinston Gang Unit patrolling streets on Halloween

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – The Kinston Department of Public Safety’s Gang Unit will be patrolling the city to make sure its estimated 500 validated gang members don’t cause issues on Halloween.

A common rumor going around this time of year is that Halloween night’s also gang initiation night.

Gang Unit Sergeant Stephen Reavis said the city usually doesn’t see a spike in violent crimes.

However, they plan to make their presence known with multiple officers out on the streets to keep an eye out particularly for theft and vandalism.

They’ll also be out where children and families are trick-or-treating to build relationships with neighbors.

“We want to be a part of the community,” Sgt. Reavis said. “We want to participate with the community so officers will be in neighborhoods where there’s a fair amount of activity for trick-or-treaters and participating.”

After trick-or-treating is finished, Sergeant Reavis and other officers will be patrolling areas with statistically high amounts of crime.

He urged trick-or-treaters to wear reflective costumes, walk in groups and use masks with proper openings.
