GREENVILLE, NC (WNCT)- Winterville Town Council hopeful Michelle Joyner is charged with identity theft. Warrants show she used someoneelse’s name to pay Greenville Utilities and US Cellular. Despite her charges, she is still on the ballot for Winterville’s Town Council.
Voters told WNCT Joyner wouldn’t be their first choice.
“I don’t want anybody like that representing me, because I’m not like that,” Winterville frequent David Harris said.
Winterville business owner Elaine Wainright said, “a break it for me, honestly.”
Business owner Elaine Wainright says everyone makes mistakes, but when you’re running for office some things can’t be ignored.
“When your trying to represent the town and the people you set yourself in a different category and we hold you to a different standard than the average joe,” Wainright said.
Another voter says if Joyner is elected, it reflects poorly on the people of Winterville.
Harris said, “It tells everyone that the people who put them in office are just as full of contempt for right and wrong as the person who is in office.”
This is Joyner’s second time being charged with fraud. In 2009 she served time for embezzlement.
Wainright said, “It’s a little more of a choice the second time around so it doesn’t look too good.”
“I would say to myself, in order for me to trust someone like that, I would be saying that I also am complacent with them. If their fradulent I cant trust them anymore. I have to let them go,” Harris said.
Winterville Police Chief Ryan Willhite says his department is still investigating.
