WILLIAMSTON, N.C. (WNCT) – The Martin County Board of Elections is dealing with an unusual mayoral race in Williamston.
One of the candidates, Dennis Leggett Jr, died on October 10.
Ballots still listed have him listed for the mayoral race.
The board followed statute and determined there was not enough time to reprint the ballots and that is why his name is still on the ballots.
After the election, if Leggett received enough votes to be elected, statute directs the board to declare the office vacant. At that point, it would filled following methods provided by state law.
According to G.S. 160A-63, “[a] vacancy that occurs in an elective office of a city shall be filled by appointment of the city council.”
Leggett ran in 2011 and received 18 votes.
