UPDATE: More than 40 dead in bus-truck crash in France

PARIS (AP) – A bus transporting retirees and a truck collided in southwest France, killing 42 people and gravely injuring at least four others.

Both vehicles caught fire after the crash.

An image released by BFM television shows what’s left of the bus – nothing but a collapsing, charred frame engulfed by smoke.

The local mayor says eight people escaped from the bus after the driver opened the door, but others were trapped as the blaze consumed the vehicles.

He said helicopters are evacuating severely burned victims.

The mayor is telling the media that the truck driver lost control of the vehicle, hitting the bus.

Other authorities remain cautious about the circumstances of the crash.

It’s the nation’s deadliest road accident in years.
