UPDATE: Man arrested in Martin Co. standoff

JAMESVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – A standoff in Martin County placed two schools on lockdown Friday afternoon.

Lt. Drew Robinson, of the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, says Joseph Allen Carnell barricaded himself inside a home approximately a block and a half away from Jamesville Elementary School.

Carnell is charged with resisting, communicating threats, assault by pointing a firearm, felony assault on law enforcement with firearm, and possession of marijuana.

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a domestic incident on Stewart Street in Jamesville around 1 p.m. Friday.

Lt. Robinson said the incident happened in close enough proximity to the school that as a precautionary measure, Jamesville Elementary and the Northeast Regional School of Biotechnology and Agriscience (NERSBA) were placed on lockdown.

Chris Manfield, the interim Superintendent of Martin County Schools, says the schools were placed on lockdown just before dismissal.

Manfield says students were dismissed to their parents through an alternate route of the school after the lockdown was in place. Manfield said a few students remained at the schools at approximately 3:30 p.m., waiting for rides.

Faculty assisted the students getting home during the lockdown.

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office, as well as the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and Williamston Police Department all responded to the scene.

No injuries were reported.
