Kinston honored for two Super Bowl players

KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) – It’s an exciting football season for WNCT, as we are the home of Super Bowl 50. Part of the Golden Super Bowl is the NFL’s ode to schools and communities that produced Super Bowl players.

Kinston is being recognized for having two football players on the same team go pro and play in a Super Bowl together.

Lin Dawson and Ron Wooten graduated from Kinston in 1977. Dawson went on to play at N.C. State, while Wooten played at UNC. It didn’t take long for them to reconnect, as they were drafted by the New England Patriots and played in Super Bowl XX in 1986.

We caught up with Dawson, who’s honored to be recognized, but says it’s not about him.

“I believe that the work and the prayers and the input by mentors and teachers, this is for then. It really is not a reflection on me. This speak boldly about the character and the kind of people that work here in Kinston,” Dawson said.

During halftime Friday night, Kinston High School will receive two golden footballs for their two Super Bowl players, which Dawson will present.
