Deputies warn to “lock your cars” in Carteret Co after break-ins

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. (WNCT) – The Carteret County Sheriff’s Office issued an alert to residents to remember to lock their cars after a rash of break-ins.

The most recent crimes reported took place in the Barrington Ridge Subdivision, Bogue Pines MHP, Blue Bird Lane (off Nine Foot Rd), Cedar Key Subdivision (off Red Barn Rd) and Hedrick Estates (off Country Club Rd).

Deputies say suspects are able to take personal property from unlocked cars, including cash, laptops and cell phones.

Jason Wank, Chief Detective of the Sheriff’s Office strongly encourages people NOT to leave anything of value in your vehicle, including your firearms.

Wank says although breaking out a window is rare and has not occurred during the recent stretch, you should not leave anything in plain view, such as a purse. Wank reminds residents to report suspicious activity 24 hours a day by calling 911 or the Carteret County Communications Center at 726-1911.
