Controversy over a hardware store in Farmville

FARMVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – A historic building is causing controversy between the town and residents.

The Farmville Hardware store has been closed since July. The town planned to purchase the land and tear it down.

Residents want to see the building restored back to its original condition, while some local leaders want to tear it down and build a parking lot. Town Manager David Hodgkins says it would cost around 500 thousand to a million dollars to bring it back to its original condition.

“There are a number of stores that are vacant in that area and we feel like additional parking would make them more feasible for new businesses to locate and we feel like it would revitalize that particular area of downtown,” Hodgkins said.

The town will re-visit the issue on January 5th.
