NEWPORT, NC (WNCT) – WNCT’s STEM Teacher of the Month is from Carteret County’s Croatan High School where sometimes it’s that special connection that teachers have and how they bond with their students that make the learning process go a little smoother. It’s the secret to success for Cory Efland.
“My story of how I ended up today is one of those that is not as glamorous as some other people’s story,” Efland explained to us. He actually had dreams of becoming an engineer, but that all changed during his senior year of high school when he won a NC Teaching Fellows Scholarship.
Seven years later, he’s crafted his skills and is settled into his role as a teacher. He tells us he tries to make connections, and to get to the students on a level beyond the curriculum.
Efland teaches introduction to engineering and design and principles of engineering and his students are learning sketching techniques, descriptive geometry as a component of design, measurement, and computer modeling.
