Cameras in Pinetops helping police fight crime

PINETOPS, N.C. (WNCT) – A small town with a big city approach to fighting crime.

“The administration of the Town of Pinetops is acting out of the box,” explained Pinetops Mayor Vines Cobb.

With more than 30 cameras stationed around town, there are very few areas that are not under surveillance.

“Since the cameras and since the extensive training of our police force our crime rate has gone down,” said Cobb.

And when something is recorded, officers have back up. This helps with investigations and in the courtroom.

“Our cases are so much stronger now with tools like this and good work from police officers,” explained Pinetops Police Captain Stacy Harrell. “Using this tool helps us basically stay out of court.”

Officers are always suited with body cameras when they’re on patrol. It’s a sign of the times.

“The Nation now and society wants everything on camera and we agree,” said Harrell. “We don’t hold anything back with that. It helps both ways.”

The cameras do not record audio or even pick it up so there is no violation of privacy. It’s simply anything you would see while out on the street.
