Local charter schools under scrutiny due to low performance

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCT) – The North Carolina Charter School Advisory Board meets Monday to discuss issues impacting schools across the state, including here in the East.

Just last week, the board put 4 charter schools on notice for low performance, raising questions about how your tax dollars are being spent.

One of those schools on notice they’ll discuss Monday is North East Carolina Prep School. 9 On Your Side has followed troubles at this Tarboro charter school, which laid off 5 teachers due to low enrollment. State records show the school is not meeting growth recommendations.

Comparing this charter school to public schools in Edgecombe County, the board says North East has a lower percentage for both college and career readiness and grade level proficiency.

The other schools put on notice include Rocky Mount Prep and two others in western counties.

Monday, members will discuss revoking charters for lack of academic performance, along with policy process, and applications for schools to open in August 2017. 28 charter school applications are currently under review, including Aurora Prep in Beaufort County.

The board meets Monday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Raleigh. We’ll keep you updated on what comes out of the meeting and how it impacts people here in the East.
