Community works to help Newport boy with life-threatening illness

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. (WNCT) — A community event on Saturday helped raise more than $2,800 for a 4-year-old with Pfieffer’s Syndrome. We first introduced you to Javon Oates on Wednesday. At least once a month, his family has to take him to Duke in Durham for medical treatment. The family’s van is very unreliable and is falling a part.

The Morehead City community came together Saturday at the Elks Lodge to raise money for a new vehicle. Eastern North Carolina native Bryan Mayer even made an appearance. Javon’s mom Dawn Brand says she appreciates the community’s support.
