Wayne Co. deputy thwarts robbery while on lunch

GOLDSBORO, N.C. (WNCT) – A breaking and entering suspect just released from jail is back behind bars after a Wayne County deputy thwarted a robbery attempt on his lunch break.

It happened Wednesday while Deputy Keith Lofton was on his lunch break. Lofton, a courtroom bailiff, was driving in the area of Walnut and William Street when he spotted a man, later identified as Paul Lee Craig, struggling with another person. It appeared Craig was attempting to take a bag belonging to the other person.

Lofton stopped his vehicle, ordering the two to stop the struggle. Craig, who had snatched the bag from the other person, attempted to flee, but Deputy Lofton quickly followed and took him into custody in front of the Wayne County Courthouse.

Craig, who had just been released from the Wayne County Detention Center on Tuesday for a misdemeanor breaking and entering charge, was charged by Lofton with one count each of Larceny from a Person and Resisting a Public Officer. He was placed in the Wayne County Detention Center under a $8,000 secured bond.
