National Walk to School Day

GREENVILLE, NC (WNCT)- Children in Pitt County are celebrating National Walk to School Day. A group of students from South Greenville Elementary walked to school to raise awareness for pedestrian safety.

Traffic injuries are the leading cause of death for children ages 3 to 14. Local law enforcement, Vidant, and other community members partnered together to make sure the students got to and from school safely.

“So it kind of brings the community together, and it also connects people to see the issues that are there,” Stephanie Ken with Vidant Medical Center said. “What makes it safe or unsafe to walk to the schools and it’s a great way for schools and the community, the kids, and volunteers to come out here and walk.”

The event was expected to include 5,000 schools from all 50 states.
