Flooding becoming an issue for residents in Pitt County

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Flooding isn’t only at the coasts, it’s happening in Pitt County.People on Briley Road are waiting for the storm to pass. The heavy rain is causing damage to their yards and belongings.

“To see everything I worked all these years, start to float away again,” said Tricia Woolard.

This is the fourth time this area has flooded to this magnitude and Tricia Woolard says something needs to be done. “My pump house is underwater, by back storage area is half way full of water, my dog kennels are totally flooded.”

Woolard’s property is one of many under water; just down the road high water signs warn drivers. Larry Davis has had enough. He wants the state to step in with a fix for the storm water drains.

“All the stuff in the ditches is backed up and if you don’t clean it out, that is where the water keeps coming from. It spreads and brings all the trash and everything comes in here,” explained Davis.

After years of having the protection of flood insurance, Woolard says it’s just getting too expensive and she’s not even in a flood zone.

“Flood insurance these days you’re looking at 1400 dollars a year on top of your regular policy.”

While it’s not an ideal situation, its times like these where neighbors band together to help each other get through the storm.
