Successful Pitt Co. Sheriff’s dog retires

GREENVILLE, NC (WNCT)- After five years of service, Asa, a K-9 with the Pitt County Sheriff’s office is retiring.

During his time with the agency, Asa has helped with numerous drug investigations, located several missing persons, and apprehended suspects.

“Their one of the greatest assets to any agency or department. When you have someone whose running narcotics, most cases they are going to have them hid inside of their cars or inside of their homes,” Asa’s handler, Macon Moore said. “Without the dogs nose we aren’t going to find those narcotics like that.”

Asa is a 6-year-old Belgium Milionis. He is retiring due to a medical condition that affects his joints.

Sheriff Neil Elks says K-9s can cost up to $14,000. He says the department will look to replace Asa with another K-9. The Pitt County Sheriff’s Office has four K-9s total.
