GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – A new study finds that North Carolina ranks 2nd worst in the country for being a teacher.
The Wallet Hub rankings were based on public education investment and teacher salaries for the 2014-2015 school year.
Some teachers said they aren’t surprised by the rankings because they feel as if lawmakers have neglected education for years.
“It gets no better than the children,” said Emily Klinedinst, a Pitt County teacher. “If you don’t put your money in your children, then you’re not putting your money in your future.”
Klinedinst said she is worried about the future because many younger teachers may look to other states who pay better.
Massachusetts and Virginia were ranked the best.
The new two year budget gives no permanent raises for veteran teachers. However, teachers will receive a one time bonus of $750 this year.
