Pedro makes final flight

MCAS CHERRY POINT (WNCT) — Pedro, thee Marine’s search and rescue helicopter, took its final flight Friday night.

The helicopter, based at Marine Corp Air Station Cherry Point, departed at 6 p.m. Friday.

In August, the group of four helicopters flew its final flight together before one was sent to the Navy.

In the past year, Pedro assisted with 21 different search and rescue missions.

Due to military budget constraints the helicopters will no longer operate beginning October 1st.

Now, local authorities will rely on highway patrol in Raleigh or the Coast Guard in Elizabeth City for rescue missions.
