ECU receives $2.5 million grant to enhance geriatric care

GREEENVILLE, NC (WNCT)- North Carolina’s geriatric population is the fastest growing segment of the state’s population. ECU’s College of Nursing is using a $2.5 million grant to enhance healthcare for the elderly.

Educators are working on a comprehensive approach to caring for older adults. The grant allows ECU to implement a model with a focus in geriatrics.

ECU College of Nursing officials say the grant will help with the university’s mission to improve healthcare in the area.

“By training our primary care providers in geriatrics we really expect that we will improve our outcomes in patient care,” ECU Dean, Dr. Sonya Hardin said. “We will increase the number of individuals that receive very specialized screenings of items that occur as one ages.”

The grant will be distributed over the course of three years.
