GREENVILLE, NC (WNCT)- There are over 12,000 CrossFit gyms in the world. As the trend continues to grow here in Eastern North Carolina, many people are wondering how safe the phenomena is.
The workout includes strength training, rowing, and flexibility.
“It’s different every day, we do different workouts so you don’t get bored,” athlete, Manny Vidao said.
Coach Brandon Johnson says people who stick to conventional workouts aren’t doing it wrong. CrossFit has a different approach.
“Its not really focusing on core first, compound functional movement, its focusing more on kind of an isolation style training,” Johnson said.
Chiropractor, Dr. Brian Wirth, says CrossFit is a great form of exercise, if you’re ready.
“If you never worked out and you want to go play a game of pickup football would you, no, you would try to slowly work into it,” Dr. Wirth said.
For those who think CrossFit is dangerous, coaches and athletes say there are risks with everything you do, but doing it the right way can be a big help.
“Your more likely to hurt yourself running than you are doing any other sport,” Johnson said.
“If your putting your spine in a proper position to do those lifts, there’s lower injury potential,” Dr. Wirth said. “It’s just like anything if I’m doing certain things to really stress myself, if I overwork my back im going to increase the chance for injury.”
Dr. Wirth says it doesn’t matter what method of exercise you choose, as long as you do something.
