Only On 9: Former FBI Agent talks about 9-11 experience

WASHINGTON, N.C. (WNCT) – Only on 9, we sat down with a former FBI Agent who was involved in the investigation of 9-11.

Alvin Powell remembers that moment on 9/11 when the first plane flew into the world trade center. “I said to myself this is not animation, this is just too real to be something that’s a joke. So right off the bat, I knew something was going on and eventually another plane flew in and I said this isn’t good.”

Powell says he stood on top of the world trade center rubble looking at the destruction.

“Bodies and body parts were there. The smell, the dust and the smoke were still lingering . Quite a few of the first responders to the 9-11 tragedy who I have the highest respect for put their lives on the line to save people they didn’t know,” Powell said.

He says he couldn’t let his thoughts get the best of him. Powell was a Relief Supervisor and Special Agent for the FBI.” You have emotions, but you have to put those emotions aside because you have to because people are depending on you to do things professionally to try to get to the bottom.”

His job was to coordinate phone calls, hotlines and faxes. He says he would take the leads to the investigated part of the command post.

“We reviewed and or analyzed over 50,000 of those leads, some of which involved some very unique information on the background of the individuals identified to be the perpetrators in the attacks,” explained Powell.

Powell says after 9/11, agencies have done a better job communicating with each other.
