RICHLANDS, N.C. (WNCT) – The Onslow County Sheriff’s Office say they charged a New York mother with leaving her child in a locked car.

These are new charges from Thursday’s incident at the Walmart in Richlands.

Deputies say Brittany Hooks, of Watertown, N.Y., left her son locked in her car in the parking lot around 5 P.M. WNCT First Alert Weather team reports the temperature at the time was in the 90s.

The baby was taken to the hospital. Richlands Police assisted.

Witness Bridget Harrison told WNCT she heard Hooks saying she had only left the boy in there for ten minutes.

Harrison said the boy looked lifeless and she saw the baby’s arms and legs twitching before crews put him in the ambulance.

Hooks was charged with misdemeanor child abuse and has an unsecured bond of $2,000.

No updates on the baby’s condition.
