Pirate offense rebounds at Monday practice

GREENVILLE (WNCT) – East Carolina turned in its 14th practice of fall camp with a near three-hour team-oriented workout in shells Monday morning at Hight Field inside the Cliff Moore Practice Complex.

“I thought the guys flew around out there today and had a great practice,” sixth-year head coach Ruffin McNeill said. “The execution was better and so was the competition on all three sides of the ball. We did some situational stuff today with the red zone and goal line being the primary focus. It’s a process and I like where we are right now as a football team.”

Monday opened with a focus period of 10 plays before the Pirates moved into individual groups. The offensive skill positions spent 50 minutes on their short passing game with quick game, screen drills and one-on-one matchups against the defensive backs during their skeleton period.

Blitz work, pass rush and an extended team session against scouts highlighted the defensive front seven’s work during the skeleton phase, which pitted all three levels against the offensive line unit.

Collectively the Pirates spent 45 minutes in team-on-team drills with emphasis on red zone and goal line situations, while also using 20 minutes of practice with the special teams group.

Another phase of camp will come to a close Tuesday morning as the Pirates will check out of their preseason dorm rooms and move into their regular season lodging accommodations.

“I know they’re looking forward to moving off-campus as we’ve had everyone under one roof so to speak since the start of camp,” McNeill added. “The break away from football and a day of rest will do all of us some good.”

ECU will return to the field Wednesday for its final two-a-day of the preseason camp, which will be followed by two more single workouts and its final scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 22.

Camp Notes:

McNeill announced Monday that OWR Tyrell Thompson (5-11, 189, Fr., Monroe, N.C.) has been added to the preseason 105-man roster, while IWR Jacen Murphy has left the team for personal reasons … Single-game, three-game mini packs and season tickets for all ECU homes games are still available to the Pirate Nation and can be purchased by calling the ECU Athletic Ticket Office at 252-737-4500, through the Online Ticket Center (http://www.ecupirates.com/tickets/otc.html), or by visiting the ECU Athletics Ticket Office.
