How to cope with back to school anxiety

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – With the start of school right around the corner, many children will experience anxiety.
Specialists say it’s essential to be aware of the symptoms of anxiety, and strategies that will help alleviate the stress experienced by children.

There are symptoms to look out for to determine if your child is suffering from anxiety related to returning to school.

Some of them include not wanting to attend school, a change in their eating habits or demeanor, not wanting to participate in what they enjoy doing, or difficulty sleeping.

But there are certain things specialists say you can do it alleviate these symptoms.

“Prior to returning from school, one thing we suggest that you start your child on a school day routine,” said Psychotherapist Dr. Leon Johnson. “This gets them acclimated to getting up in the morning, preparing their clothes the night before, mentally preparing themselves for the challenge of the day.”

You can also get your child excited for school by planning a back to school clothes shopping trip, making a list of school supplies, and even practice coping skills with your child.
