NEWPORT, N.C.(WNCT) – The Newport Police Department announced officers caught an assault suspect after briefly chasing him down.
They had considered Shane White armed and dangerous.
Police say the assault incident happened at the Wilco-Hess on the 6600 block of Highway 70 in Newport on Wednesday.
Officers were called to the gas station at 3:45p.m on Wednesday. Police say when they arrived officers found a bystanders giving first aid to an unconscious man in the parking lot. Officers say the victim was also bleeding.
Police said on Thursday that Wednesday’s suspect Shane White, 32, beat up and robbed the victim two years ago.
Chief Jeff Clark said in a release officers caught up to White on Thursday night at 10:23 PM on Roberts Road. Officers had been checking out a possible location of where White was at and he got out the back door of the place. Officers chased after him.
Investigators say witness accounts and surveillance footage show a man punched the victim in the head after he exited the gas station.
The victim was taken to a trauma center for injuries sustained during the attack. Police said on Thursday he is still in the hospital in serious condition.
Police say White faces a felony charge of Assault Inflicting Serious Bodily Injury since the attack was “unprovoked and violent attack.”
Police say White was on probation for Breaking and Entering at the time of the attack.
White is in the Carteret County Jail under a $750,000 secured bond.
