New Details: Camp Lejeune Marine who died during conditioning identified

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C.(WNCT) –  Thursday morning a Camp Lejeune Marine with 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment lost consciousness during a conditioning hike aboard Camp Lejeune.

The Marine, 22-year-old Cpl. Alexis Alcarez of Scaremento, California, was taken to the Camp Lejeune Naval Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Camp Lejeune officials say it’s normal protocol to have medical personnel on hand during hikes.

Alcarez was a Field Radio Operator, and joined the Marines in 2012. He was transferred to Camp Lejeune in 2015. His death is currently under investigation.
