Kinston leaders to consider allowing relatives to work for city during Monday meeting

KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) – The Kinston City Council will consider Monday whether to allow their relatives to apply for and be hired for city jobs.

Current ordinance states immediate family members of the mayor, city council, city manager and human resources director can’t be hired by the city.

Councilmember Wynn Whittington requested the council and mayor consider exempting themselves from the ordinance.

The only provision would be those family members don’t report directly or indirectly to the council.

Mayor B.J. Murphy doesn’t support the change.

“The councilmembers hire and fire the city manager who hire and fire the department heads who make the ultimate decision,” he said. “To say that the councilmembers don’t have an indirect influence on this decision is downright fallacy”

WNCT’s attempts to speak with Whittington and other councilmembers who support the proposal were unsuccessful.

The council will meet again Monday at 5:30 p.m. at the municipal building.
