GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Medical experts from around the world have come to ECU’s Heart Institute for a summer camp of their own.
The group is focusing on the role of mitochondria in the human body. Mitochondria are known as the engine of cells in the body and are essential for life.
Doctors say learning more about them could lead to great medical advances down the road.
“If we can really figure out and connect the dots, then we can start to devise strategies either pharmaceutical or non-pharmaceutical strategies to try to better prevent or treat disease,” explained Darrell Neufer, East Carolina Diabetes & Obesity Institute.
Drug companies are already designing drugs that may one day lead to better treatment for conditions like Diabetes and Parkinson’s Disease.
