Rocky Mount chosen by White House to help innovators

ROCKY MOUNT, NC (WNCT) – The White House tapped the City of Rocky Mount to help innovators pursue their ideas.

The city will be using a $50,000 grant as part of the “Startup in a Day” fund.

The challenge given to cities chosen across the country is to have the local governments make it easier for people to start small businesses.

Rocky Mount will use the money to create a new online portal to help people fill out forms.

“The portal will allow payment and forms to all be completed online,” said Ken Graves, director for Planning and Development. “The portal will ask questions like the location of the business and the business type, as well as historic status and last use to determine if it is permissible in terms of zoning restrictions. If so, a Certificate of Occupancy (CO) will be issued. If not, the system will notify the user that a change in location or a request for rezoning is necessary.”

All 25 cities selected must implement their projects within 12 months.
