UPDATE: Conley names interim football coach after Paschal’s suspension is upheld

GREENVILLE, NC (WNCT) – D.H. Conley High School has named Nate Conner as interim head football coach for the Vikings during the 2015 season. This decision comes after the NCHSAA upheld the year-long suspension of Conley football coach Brian Paschal.

The ruling comes a day after Paschal and his legal team appealed the suspension that was handed down on July 16.

The NCHSAA did make one concession to the suspension, allowing Paschal to attend DH Conley football games.

The North Carolina High School Athletics Association found that Pascal violated NCHSAA Rule 1.2 regarding Recruiting/Undue Influence. Rule 1.2.1 states “no student shall be subjected to undue influence by an individual or group of individuals to induce or cause him to transfer from one school to another for athletics purposes.”

In Thursday’s appeal, Paschal’s lawyer Sonny McLawhorn asked for the suspension to be lifted immediately in light of the evidence presented. He also asked that Paschal and all of the county coaches be advised on the proper way to communicate with players in this age of social media. McLawhorn called for the county to produce instructional videos and written directives on any and all aspects of dealing with student athletes, especially with several schools in the county that have open enrollment.

Paschal and his legal team are considering any other options that might be available in response to the suspension.
