KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) – A new gun range is open in Kinston and the owners are shooting to educate the public while keeping everyone safe. The owner, Russel Rhodes says safety is his number one priority.
“We don’t want anyone to be exposed to Lead. Lead is our harmful substance if ingested, so we are making sure that the lead that is expelled from the firearm is moved to a scrubber.”
Neuse Sports Shop requires employees who are exposed to the range to shower and wash their clothing. This keeps the exposure to the dangerous element to a minimum. Other precautions are taken to keep people safe from lead, including a specialized ventilation system.
“It will make sure that any dust around the firearm is moved down range at a rapid rate so that it’s struck through filter systems before it’s re-circulated or expelled,” explains Rhodes.
Even customers are encouraged to rinse off after shooting.
“The first priority of Neuse Sport Shop is safety, we want everyone safe, to have a good time, and go home safe,” says David Wise.
Customers must also pass a background check before shooting at the range.
“After they complete the test and all that, we check everything off, we and we will send them with their eye and ear protection and the ability to shoot,” said Wise.
The new range is the only public facility in Kinston.
“We want the public to know the guns in their home, how they work, how to use them safely, how to train on those guns so that their comfortable with them, and when they aren’t using them, they secure them in a way that someone you don’t, can’t get access to them.”
Rhodes says they require their range safety officers to get blood work every six months to make sure they aren’t exposed to lead.
