WASHINGTON, N.C.(WNCT)- If you plan on visiting Washington’s waterfrony area, expect to see more people than usual. The city is seeing an increase in visitors. Elizabeth Byrd with the Washington Harbor District Alliance said that store owners and restaurants are reporting better sales this summer.
“We’ve always been called the best little secret in eastern North Carolina, well we’re not so much of a secret anymore, and we’ve purposefully set out to try to attract people to come to our great town,” Byrd said.
Waterfront business owners told WNCT that the increase in customers is a result of all the events the city puts on.
Business owner, Leigh Furlough, said, “downtown does a lot to bring tourists and attract different groups. We do a lot of festivals, we do smoke on the water, music in the streets, so we’re really trying to make an effort to bring families and different people in.”
Waterfront visitors said they enjoy the downtown area because its an inexpensive way to do things.
“It’s a friendly atmosphere, it’s cool on the water, it’s a lot better to walk here, everybody speaks to you, it’s very friendly, and they have a playground for my children,” visitor, Julia Reyas said.
Local organizations along with the city say they are working hard to improve the downtown area, and it feels like its starting to pay off.
