North Carolina wins historic title at Tournament of State Champions

GREENVILLE, NC (WNCT) – Head Coach Jay Boaz stood drenched in water. His squad was prancing around him beaming. Friends and family members were hustling down the stairs onto the field to join in on the festivities.

North Carolina had just outlasted Virginia 5-2 to win the 2015 Tournament of State Champions in Greenville on Wednesday.

The victory at Elm Street Park marked the first time in the 9-10 age division that a team from North Carolina captured the championship.

Folger Boaz led the North Carolina All-Stars, out of East Surry, by throwing five innings, allowing just two runs on four hits, while striking out seven.

North Carolina was able to hold off scoring threats by Virginia, out of Loudoun County, Va., in the first, fourth, and sixth innings.

This marked the second year that Greenville hosted the Tournament of State Champions for the 9-10 age division.

On July 31, Greenville will once-again host the Tournament of State Champions for the 10-11 age division beginning July 31.
