Marine charged in head-on collision in Craven County

NEW BERN, N.C (WNCT) – Two people are recovering in the hospital after a head-on collision in Craven County.

It happened Saturday morning on Highway 17 about half a mile north of Vanceboro.

The Highway Patrol says a Cherry Point Marine was attempting to pass another driver when he collided head on with an SUV driven by 44-year-old James Moore, who was traveling north.

The Marine, 21-year-old Matthew Cartwright, has been charged with careless and reckless driving.

Both drivers were taken to Vidant Medical Center where they remain in fair condition.
