Tuscarora tribe returns to New Bern after 300 years

NEW BERN, N.C. (WNCT) – Community members gathered at the convention center to learn more about the history of the city.In 1713, the Tuscarora tribe left New Bern and traveled to New York. There they became the 6th nation of the Iroquois.

Saturday was first time the tribe was back in New Bern since the end of the war, 300 years ago. Chief Leo Henry says he came to New Bern to teach people his culture. Henry says it’s important that kids learn about history.

“Everyone should travel and see where their grandparents so forth lived and what they had to go through and be thankful of what they have today,” said Chief Leo Henry of the Turtle Clan.

The organizer of the event plans to hold a history fair every few years.
