Kinston Police auction off 1928 Tommy gun

KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) – Kinston Police auction off a 1928 Tommy gun that’s been in their custody for almost 80 years.

Police say the cost of the gun was around 200 dollars in 1935 when they purchased it. Director of Kinston’s Department of Public Safety says the gun was stored in a safe area and serviced throughout the years. He says the gun is getting auctioned off for a good reason.

“We have swat, we have other teams on the ground and some of their weaponry of their equipment is getting old in excess of twenty years, so I had to make a decision and balance that nostalgia versus officer safety and I decided to go with officer safety,” says Johnson.

Thompson says the gun is in excellent condition and is placed up for auction on govdeals.com. He says gun collectors have already shown interest and contacted them.
