KITTY HAWK, N.C. (AP) — The state Transportation Department plans to close part of N.C. Highway 12 in Kitty Hawk for about 30 days, weather permitting, to rebuild a dune washed away by a nor’easter in May.
The closure of N.C. 12 between Lillian Street and White Avenue is scheduled to begin Monday so that crews can rebuild the section of dune that waves washed away.
Carolina Marine Structures received a contract of almost $336,000 for the project. In addition to rebuilding the dune, crews will install sand bags.
Crews made temporary repairs to the dune in early May but had to wait for permits to be approved before rebuilding the dune completely.
A detour will be in place.
