GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Vidant Medical Center is revamping its food service, joining a growing list of hospitals in North Carolina that are turning to “hotel-style room service.”
The focus is due in part because Medicare is now basing its payments partly on “patient satisfaction surveys.”
Vidant will offer a new program called “At Your Request.”
Patients will call to a center where staff will offer more meal options than before.
Those meals will be catered through an electronic database containing a patient’s food allergies and orders from their doctor.
There will no longer be set meal delivery times as patients can order any time during the day.
Vidant’s senior vice president of operations Reggie Pearson said this will also make patients happier and healthier to ultimately recover quicker.
“We think our patients are going to enjoy it more,” Pearson said. “We think the patient’s families will enjoy it because now, they’re able to come in, and they’re able to also assist with the order process either by being in the room or doing it from home.”
Pearson said the hospital won’t raise meal prices. It will implement the system in the coming months.
