Preventing boat accidents

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT)- When dealing with boat engines, the biggest hazard, is fumes accumulating. To prevent fumes from igniting make sure to run a fan if your boat is equipped with one. Everyone should be off the boat unless you are directly dealing with the engine. There should be a fire extinguisher on board. If you are using a removable tank, make sure to place the tank on the ground before filling it up to prevent static. If you do get burned to do panic.

Wildlife officer, Gary Harrison, said, “kind of the stuff you are taught as a child really, stop, drop, and roll, if you catch fire. Or be prepared if you see someone and their in trouble and your armed with that fire extinguisher then your in a position to take some swift action at that point.”

Officer Harrison says prevention is key, when dealing with boating safety.
