Charges pending after Beaufort Co courthouse incident

WASHINGTON, NC (WNCT) – Beaufort County Deputies are looking at possibly charging a man after an incident at the courthouse last week.

They say a deputy approached a suspicious man in the courthouse who identified himself as a federal agent.

When asked about identification, the man gave the deputy a card about a release from an Ohio mental health institution. Deputies say the card read that the man believed he was a federal agent and the man had highlighted those words.

Deputies say he had a bb gun that was not loaded and handcuffs on him.

He was transported to Vidant Beaufort Hospital to the mental health ward. Deputies say he is still there this week.

Charges are pending based on a mental evaluation including carrying a concealed weapon and impersonating an officer.

Earlier this year, county commissioners voted to create a committee to look at security issues at the courthouse.
