Beachgoers avoid water during Independence Day travels

There’s been seven shark attacks this year. Three in Brunswick County, three in Dare County, and one in surf city.

At Atlantic Beach today, only about a handful of beach goers ventured into the ocean to take a swim.

Lifeguards we spoke with said they don’t anticipate much action in the water this weekend, and tourists coming to the area agree.

“If we go in at all today it will probably be six inches of water and that’s it. You know, it’s a big concern,’ said Randy Kovash, a tourist visiting Atlantic Beach.

Lifeguards do expect many people to still travel to the beaches.

Michael Perry, an Atlantic Beach lifeguard, said, “We are expecting to see a few less people in the water with everything that’s been going on with the sharks, but I wouldn’t say there is actually anymore real danger than there would usually be. I just think it will be fewer people in the water based on that perception.
