Newport motorcyclist killed in Saturday crash

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. (WNCT) – A Newport man is dead after he was cut off while driving his motorcycle.

It happened Saturday night around 11:25 on Highway 24 in Carteret County.

Troopers say Raymond Ray Pender was traveling east along the highway in a 2010 Dodge pickup when he turned into the path of two motorcycles headed west. That’s when one of the motorcyclists, Steven Charles Vandevoord, was thrown from his bike and hit the right rear quarter panel of the truck. Vandevoord was killed as a result of his injuries.

Pender, the driver of the truck, told troopers he was attempting a U-turn at the time of the incident.  He’s charged with Felony Death by Motor Vehicle (DWI) and failing to yield the right away. He was placed in the Carteret County Jail under an undetermined secured bond.

Troopers say alcohol was a factor in the incident.

Broad and Gales Creek Fire and EMS responded to the scene.
